The Mystery of the Black Widow Spider

OK, so here's the story... of course, I am home alone. And I MEAN alone. Larry is 15 hours away in Montana playing rugby. I am home with the pooches. It's a saturday night.. I had spent the day bike riding, walking the dogs, cleaning the house and such. I decided it was time for dinner... I got up and went to the kitchen, and before you know it, I see out of the corner of my eye a BIG BLACK SHINY spider.

If you know me, you know what happened next. I squealed and ran from the kitchen. Now, we have an open floor plan, so i can still see the sucker. And he's on the ceiling. If he was on the floor, I'd sic a dog after it. Then I see him trailing down from the ceiling on a string... yay for him. He lands on the range top. Of course, the one I was going to use to cook dinner. Sigh. I think, I could turn it on and cook him, but then I'd have to reach over him and he'd probably go scrambling away and make me scream again. Then he disappears from view. Under the range. Nice. We have black ceramic range cover thingies, so I can't see him at all.

Then a shiver goes down my spine. My violin instructor, Jessie, had told me she caught a black widow spider by her bed once. I remember her telling me how impressed she was with it and how shiny it was. Shiny. Black. Spider.

I flip up my laptop and pop open Wikipedia. And there it was. My shiny black horrifying spider. And he's hiding in my stove.

So I call Larry anyhow, and I tell him "OK, can I be afraid this time? It's a black widow" He tells me to get the vacuum cleaner. I don't. I call Papa John's and get a pizza for dinner.

The next morning, I pretend he's still hiding in the stove and I get cereal for breakfast. I try to tell myself he's gone for good and won't be back. But i was wrong. Later in the day, I see something black and shiny on the recycle can in the kitchen. That's it. I'm hungry for lunch and I'm not ordering another pizza!! I got the vacuum cleaner with the long wand, and I sucked it up, and decided to suck up a few other bits of dirt and dog hair on the floor, hoping to beat it up a little. I keep the vacuum on and drag it outside to the front porch. If it's dead, well, Larry can clean out the bagless canister. If it's not dead, he can crawl out and be back outside where he belongs.

See my fear of spiders isn't always unfounded. It might not have killed me, but a Black Widow bite could hurt. I've seen pictures. I don't want to go there.

Pilates in the Park

So last weekend, I got up and met a few Boulderites to practice some Pilates and take a hike in an open space park in Boulder. She taught us how to be careful of our posture while hiking with a pack, as well as to make sure we used our stomach muscles to hold us up, and not strain our backs trying to carry a heavy pack. It was nice and I got to meet a few nice people, and we got to go for a walk in this open space park one the west edge of Boulder...

We bought the farm...

AND we kicked the bucket.

Seriously, our realtor joked to us about "buying the farm"
So when we went in for the housing inspection and to take soil samples for review at CSU, I made sure to set the bucket on the ground and kick it.

Next time we go back (probably at closing) I must remember to bring a towel, so I can throw that in as well. Then we'll have hit the whole trifecta. It's all good!

Is this a bad omen? Our inspector cancelled on Monday because he was sick.
We rescheduled to Thursday. BUt no one told the homeowner... so we had to cancel again today. We will reschedule for MONDAY. So we wait another weekend for the inspection. GRRRR.... I'll keep this site posted... I just can't wait to have my own house again and start making a home out of it! So we are still waiting...

We're taking shovels and trowels and buckets to bring back soil samples to have analyzed at Colorado State. And barring any major structural issues... we'll be buying a house!

MSU HOCKEY just won the NCAA Championship! AWESOME! Way to go Spartans!

It was a tie game in the third, and MSU scores with 18.9 seconds on the clock! BC pulls the goalie, and we score a third with less than 2 seconds on the clock. It's all over! Way to go SPARTANS! I finally get to see Spartan Hockey take home the big win!!

We are under contract!

OK, so is this like telling people you got the job before you pass the drug test? Or telling your boss you are pregnant at 8 weeks? Am I jumping the gun here?

Well, I don't care... after looking at every possible plot of land with at least 5 acres (some of those acres being complete rock cliffs, or serious mountain grades) we finally found one that was FLAT, with a house that was OK.(it might get a bit tight if we ever have teenagers living in the house, but we'll deal with that when we get there)

Anyhow - we are under contract - so it's inspection time. Barring any huge surprises, we'll be calling this place home come June... And can we call ourselves farmers yet? It has a nice barn!
